Are flaws really flaws?

We got “flaws” as one of our essay topics for our prelims, and without thinking much I chose it. I just know I walked out of that hall thinking “my examiner just got a PROPER ted talk.” The human mind works in funny ways - we have predetermined what we accept as ‘flaws’ and ‘perfections’ at our own convenience. It’s like crime you know? It’s only ‘sinful’ or ‘heinous’ when it seems to have crossed our moral boundaries, otherwise it’s just a “story worth telling.” Somehow we also take great interest in other peoples perceptions on our flaws. I mean, since when did we start living OUR lives through OTHER peoples lenses? Are flaws really flaws? Or are they just a figment of our imagination that we put into boxes of ‘acceptable’ and ‘hide from the world.’ It’s not really a flaw till we’re uncomfortable with it right? The second we see something that doesn’t match our expectation of ‘good’ we seem to think something’s wrong with it. In the human experience, I think it has a lot to do with ones Locus of Control - the degree to which people believe events in their lives are controlled by external forces or internal forces. In my opinion, flaws are a form of motivation, and us humans have just not been able to crack it. Okay sit down, close your eyes and think about what it is about you, and you only, that bothers you. Lots of you-s there. If you can name a few - and I hope you can - close back your eyes and think about how you can resolve it. And no, your clothes are not outdated, you’re not too lazy, you don’t read too much into things. Go deeper, see what really makes you want to rip your hair out. Those are not flaws either by the way, they’re just parts of yourself that you need to better to reach your highest potential. If you spend all your time trying to fix what others pointed out as flaws, you will literally die trying. You need to think about what bothers you, what’s gets under your skin - and that’s something worth altering. You know how they say that Rome wasn’t built in a day? Could we even begin to imagine the number of mistakes they may have made? I’m sure Michelangelo also mixed too much white paint every once in a while, but all we see is a work of art. Flaws are in fact just a convenience box and for some reason we feel the need to fill others’ boxes too. We shouldn’t, but like I said, the human mind works in funny ways. Flaws really are kind parts of ourselves that we forget to ever reciprocate to. They are the real constants in our lives, that if we don’t spend reaching it to our satisfaction, we haven’t fulfilled our purpose. They say we all have a ‘purpose’ in life, but the real purpose is us, ourselves. There is a reason flaws rhymes with flowers (bad joke, I know) - they are soft, beautiful things that need to crack open from their buds to show their beautiful side. We need to spend as much time giving them the love and care that they need so that they turn out to be the best flower in the bunch - only according to themselves of course. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, after all.
